We are excited to announce the Indiana Commission for Higher Education has given its final approval to the Master of Science Program in Economics and Data Science at IU Bloomington. This degree will be offered in collaboration between the Department of Economics and the Luddy School of Informatics Data Science Program. It will provide students depth and breadth of knowledge and combined skills in both subjects. The demand for economists with strong computational skills and for data scientists with a deep understanding of economics is high and increasing.
Another significant new degree we are excited about putting in motion is the accelerated B.S.-M.S. degree track. The Graduate School Bulletin states the AMP program gives motivated, ambitious students a competitive advantage in the global marketplace and saves time. IU Bloomington students enrolled in an AMP can complete both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just five years. This saves time and money all while positioning students for maximum post-graduate success.
The Department of Economics was delighted to host the Inaugural Fred and Judy Witney Lecture in Labor Economics on April 18, 2024. This lecture series honors the legacy of Professor Fred Witney, award-winning economist, prominent scholar, and a labor arbitrator of national stature. His booming voice earned him the nickname of “Whispering Fred” from admiring students. He retired in 1988 after 41 years at Indiana University. Fred passed away in 1999, followed by his wife Judy in 2001.
David Hummels, Distinguished Professor of Economics and previous Dean of the Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business at Purdue University, presented the inaugural lecture entitled “How Globalization is Reshaping Labor Markets and How Education Can Respond.” The lecture was well attended by family, faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students. A reception was held immediately after the lecture, followed by a dinner.
We are very sad to announce the passing of longtime faculty member, Paul Wolf Kuznets, Professor Emeritus of Economics, who passed away on September 6, 2024. He is remembered fondly by the colleagues and staff who overlapped with him. Read about his life here.
