The Department of Economics is delighted to announce that the Inaugural Fred and Judy Witney Lecture in Labor Economics will be held on April 18, 2024 at 4:45PM in Wylie Hall 015. David Hummels, Distinguished Professor of Economics and previous Dean of Purdue University’s Daniels School of Business, will present the lecture entitled “How Globalization is Reshaping Labor Markets and How Education Can Respond.” (PowerPoint) This lecture series honors the legacy of Professor Fred Witney, award-winning economist, prominent scholar, and a labor arbitrator of national stature. His booming voice earned him the nickname of “Whispering Fred” from admiring students. He retired in 1988 after 41 years at Indiana University. Fred passed away in 1999; followed by his wife Judy in 2001.
