The Department of Economics accepts applications to the Ph.D. program for fall admission only. Please note we are not currently accepting applications for the M.A. and M.A.T. programs.
How to Apply
All application materials must be received no later 11:59 pm on Thursday, December 1, 2016. You can download and print off an application materials checklist for International Applicants.
All application materials must be received no later 11:59 pm on Sunday, January 15, 2017. You can download and print off an application materials checklist for Domestic Applicants.
Complete the online application
You must provide the following information in the online application:
- Statement of Purpose: Submit a written statement (1-2 standard printed pages) outlining your goals and interest in pursuing graduate study at Indiana University. This statement must be submitted electronically at the end of the online application.
- Current Resume may be submitted electronically at the end of the online application.
- All applicants must fill out the Departmental Questions form, which you will find within the online application.
- Three Letters of Recommendation: The contact information (including names, street addresses, phone numbers and email addresses) of three people who will submit your letters of recommendation via the online application system. The online system will then email your contacts with instructions on how to upload their references online.
Recommended: Your online application to I.U. should be submitted at least 2 weeks before the actual deadline in order for your recommenders to have the opportunity to respond to their notifications by the appropriate deadline. Applications with late materials cannot be guaranteed consideration for financial aid packages.
Writing samples are not required. We do welcome them, however, and they will be considered as part of your application materials. They may be uploaded in the online application or hard copies may be mailed to the Department of Economics.
Pay the application fees
The cost for submitting the application for the Ph.D. in Economics is $55 for Domestic Applicants and $65 for International Applicants. The application fees are non-refundable.
Submit the Supplemental Economics Application
All applicants must fill out and submit the Mathematics and Economics Preparation Inventory for Indiana University Economics Graduate Program Applicants for their application to be considered complete.
Send your official transcripts
Please have official transcripts sent directly from all undergraduate institutions attended, as well as from any graduate programs (if applicable).
Our Graduate Admissions Committee usually looks for a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
For international students, if the original documents are not in English, a verified translation must be sent in addition to the official transcripts in your native language. The Office of International Admissions will not accept electronic transcripts.
If you are an international applicant, all transcripts must be sent to the Office of International Admissions, even if you have attended an institution in the United States. Please have your sealed, official transcripts (with English translation, if applicable) mailed to:

For Domestic Students and U.S. Permanent Residents who have attended degree programs (not overseas studies) outside of the United States: Please submit your sealed, official transcripts no later than December 15, 2016. Please also email firstname.lastname@example.org if this applies to you.
If you are in the process of completing a Bachelor’s degree when you apply, a transcript showing your current enrollment in your course of study is acceptable. If admitted to Indiana University, you will be required to submit a final, official transcript directly to Indiana University prior to your matriculation, verifying the completion of your degree and the date your degree was awarded.
Submit your GRE results
Please have ETS send official GREscore results electronically to the Economics Department at Indiana University Bloomington. The Institution Code is 1324. The Department of Economics Code is 1801. Please note that we do not accept GMAT scores.
Submit Your TOEFL Results (International Applicants)
If your native language is not English, you must submit an official test score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), taken within the last two years, regardless of where you were educated. This will not be waived. The testing service should electronically report the TOEFL scores directly to the Economics Department at Indiana University Bloomington.
The TOEFL Code is 1324, the Department of Economics Code is 84. If you have taken the IELTS, the minimum score for consideration is a 6.5 while a 7.0 and above is competitive for financial aid consideration. Please have your scores officially submitted to the Department.
An official TOEFL score report is required in all international applicant files.
- If TOEFL scores are older than 2 years and/or have a total score that is less than 90 on the iBT, or if you submit an IELTS score, please be aware that you may be required to take the Indiana English Proficiency Exam if you are admitted to Indiana University. Students are required to enroll and pass any English courses prescribed from the results of this examination. Tuition fees for English proficiency courses are the same as for other courses; however, the credit hours earned in English proficiency courses will not be counted toward degree requirements.
- To be eligible for an Associate Instructorship position in future years, students must also meet additional English language requirements, which includes becoming certified by passing the Test of English Proficiency for International Associate Instructor Candidates.

International Applicants must provide a Declaration of Financial Support Form upon notification of acceptance to Indiana University. Please fill out and submit this information to the Office of International Admissions directly, either by mail to the above address, by email to email@example.com, or by fax to (812) 856-5378.
The evidence of financial support will not be part of your academic admission decision, as this information is held in confidence by the Office of International Admissions. Applications received without any evidence of financial support can be processed for an admission decision. However, admission will be delayed if the Office of International Admissions does not have this information on file. Therefore, it is recommended that you have the form prepared and ready for submission if you are notified that you have been admitted to Indiana University.
